Temple, TOGA, and Time to Myself

Temple, TOGA, and Time to Myself

Back to School

DSCF1246

Well, it’s that time again. Summer is over and its back to school for everyone. Alayna is in 5th grade and really likes school and her teacher so far. Although, she isn’t thrilled about being forced to do reading minutes every night, which I find ironic since she reads every night anyway! She doesn’t like being told what to do.

Tyler says he likes high school so much! He only got lost the 1st day, but seems to be doing well keeping up with everything so far. We will see how he does this week as seminary and show choir start!!

DSCF1247

Kayla also seems to like her classes this year. She has already had quite a bit of homework. She is trying hard to juggle school and a job and seminary starts Monday.

Marisa has been staying with Missy and her family this week. It sounds like they had a lot of fun! She checks into her dorm tonight. We enjoy staying in touch by face-timing or on facebook.

Temple and TOGA

One of the cutest things I have noticed this week is how close Kayla and Tyler have gotten. I love it!! They went on a temple trip with the youth to Nauvoo yesterday morning and then attended the Back to School TOGA party/dance. It’s a costume party and their group went as a rainbow. Kayla was blue and Tyler was green.

Time to Myself

This was a great week for me since the kids were back in school and I was still off. However, there is always too much to do.

1. Had a lunch date with Bob

2. Treated myself to the new Cupcake bakery by our house

DSCF1251

3. Made more salsa- FYI takes forever when doing by yourself

4. Had a “White Collar” marathon

5. Made freezer meals for next week and did all the grocery shopping.

6. Did meal planning for the whole month

7. Completed beastly project for my masters class.

8. Worked out every day and did all the yard work.

9. Biked with Alayna to and from school

10. Watched some fun movies as a family like the new Sherlock Homes, Superman Returns, Man on a Ledge, Journey 2, Legend of the Guardians (with Alayna)

11. Made awesome new meals from Pinterest

12. Dreading Monday cause I REALLY don’t want to go back to work.

And our summer ends…

We made it home safely from the trip. We didn’t make the zoo that we planned on the last day because Tyler had a stomach sickness and laid in the back the whole trip and Bob had another infection starting. Felt like the longest travel day of all time. I am currently researching a way to teleport us next time we need to travel cause this trip is for the birds.

A huge storm came and apparently ripped up our trampoline (which by the way is a heavy beast) and slammed it into our adjoining fence with our neighbors. Poles were ripped out and it was strewn all over the lawn. Apparently, I took a brilliant picture with no memory card in my camera so no one will believe it really happened. But Bob and neighbor got the fence fixed and was able to reassemble the trampoline to look almost new, more “squiggly” actually…

We spent the week unpacking, cleaning, and preparing for school which starts this coming Wednesday. Alayna moved into Marisa’s room the 1st day and arranged it perfectly “her” way. I made 12 jars of spaghetti (even burnt a whole batch cause I suck) and 8 jars of salsa. We made homemade honey wheat bread using our new electric wheat grinder which worked like a charm.

Kayla flew home from Utah yesterday and went through 6 gate changes and a 2 hour delay. I think it was good for her to go through this all herself. She came home, and promptly left 30 minutes later to a party at a friends house. Yep, we know where we stand.

Alayna spent all day preparing a special restaurant for her, signs and all.

Summer is over and we are sad….

Marisa is in Salt Lake City staying with Missy for the week.  She will check into her dorm in exactly one week and she can hardly wait.  We are tremendously grateful for so many family members who housed us, then our two girls, and for all the acts of kindness that were done for our family and our girls and making this transition smoother.  We feel blessed to have so many people care about us so thank you!

Heading Home and Training with Jake

We woke up early this morning for a fun training session with Jake.  I’m in love with the treadmills they use and I impressed myself by walking backwards and not falling on my face in front of everyone!

Then we left Marisa and Kayla in Logan and headed for home.  Made it to Laramie.

Bear Lake…on Accident…?

We had an interesting day on Friday.  1st I took Tyler and Bob shopping at Old Navy and we had great success!

Then we went with Gparents, and Jonathan and Diana to go see “The Dark Knight Rises”.  Loved it!  Love Robin even more!  Love him to death!

Then we had this great idea to head up to the canyon to get our (Hart) family pictures done and do a picnic with everyone.  Great idea right?  Except you forget you are dealing with idiots here.  My mom gave us directions and we thought we understood.  It really is a case of a severe misunderstanding.  She told us to go to the 1st dam and look for them.  We kept driving and driving and never saw that “dam” (DAMN!) sign.  Marisa and Bob wanted to turn back but  was determined to find them.  We kept climbing and climbing.  Then after an hour (yes, you heard me, we saw this huge lake.  And we were like, “Hey that’s a HUGE lake.  Wouldn’t that be crazy if we had actually gone all the way to Bear Lake.” and then we thought “no, that’s in a different canyon”.  Lo, and behold, it was Bear Lake!!!  We took pics as proof.

Meanwhile the family who knows where the dam is waited for us for 2 hours, got kicked out of the park by a crazy lady on a golf cart, and had as rough a time as we did.  Miraculously we found them as they were leaving and as we hit the bottom of the canyon.  So, we did get our formal family pictures by the awesome and amazing Brandi and then went o Jonathan and Dianas where Gma saved the day with dinner and we watched some Olympic records get broken.  Whew!

Went to In-N-Out for Lunch!  Whoohoo!

Went to temple square but so dang crowded we couldn’t find a parking spot anywhere so we had to forego pics we had planned.  Oh well.

Hung out at Jonathan and Dianas for the afternoon.

Tubing Down the Provo River

Tubing Down the Provo River

I would like to say in advance that my writing is in no way good enough to capture the events of our adventurous afternoon, but I will try anyway. To get the full effect though, you probably had to be there.

Bob found this place where we could tube down the Provo River. I have fond memories of going down that with my own family growing up. The heat here is gross so we were so excited to go!

When we got there, we had to put on these enormous vests. I’m not kidding. They weren’t like the little weird orange ones we wear for canoeing. These were beast-like and we looked pretty silly. They boarded us all onto school buses to transport us up the river. (People were kayaking, rafting, tubing, etc.) We were given instructions on the way. We listened very closely as to follow them closely and such.

You have seen “Lazy Rivers” at water parks right? Well, I think that’s what we were all picturing. This description on their website is an understatement: “Tubing on the Provo River is strenuous and requires good swimming skills and physical fitness. You will encounter bridges, rapids, low-hanging branches, rocks, cold water and other obstacles.” My response…YOU THINK???

So, we get to the point where we put our tubes in. Only Alayna and I are tied together. And we take off...The current was much faster than we anticipated and our ability to maneuver these plastic donuts was greatly underestimated!

Sitting in the tube the way you are supposed to, just makes you go in circles like a spinning top and hit every tree along the bank. Going superman style is awkward, you look like a dork, and you can’t navigate that way either. So, being the intelligent person I am, I opted for Alayna and I to kneel in the center so we could lean over the front and use our arms to “paddle”. It would have stayed a brilliant idea if I hadn’t fully rammed my knee into a giant submerged rock from heck. I’m shocked my kneecap didn’t shatter. SO, I found the best position was squatting, knees up, and bum on one edge of the tube.

Kayla rammed straight into a huge tree on the side and flipped over, INTO the tree. She was screaming for help, but we were all ahead of her flying down the river with no way to stop. I am not exactly sure how she ever got herself back out.

Tyler was having a terrible time and then completely flipped over. I grabbed his raft, and he held on for dear life as we hit a huge set of rapids. He tried hard to get back in, but couldn’t even lift himself out of the water. His poor legs and stomach hit all the rocks as we flew down the river at what felt like 60 miles an hour. He is very loud and his voice echoed through the canyon, “Oh, the PAIN!!!” “I can’t get up” “Oh, it hurts” “Oh, so much PAIN”. I was dying laughing as I tried hard to navigate us (which was useful as trying to drive a car with a banana.) and poor Alayna had to be a ball, curled up in her tube to avoid getting whipped to death by the tree limbs. Never have I wished so hard for a video camera!

Meanwhile, Bob is having a perfectly leisure stroll through the middle of the river not hitting a dang thing and his long arms working as perfect propellers…..no sign of Marisa….

At the end of the rapids, we found small island (actually we hit it) and dumped out our tubes and hooked together with Kayla. That’s when I noticed my flip-flops were gone. (Remember I was picturing a lazy river…). As we continued down the river, we were told we had to go to the right of the next island. Yeah, right? We were going full throttle to the left. Thank heavens some fishermen grabbed us and shot us off to the right as the left would have been treacherous and we probably would have been seriously maimed!

We finally caught up to Bob and Marisa and all hooked together for the remainder of the time. We were speeding down the river when we saw the bridge. Instructions were to “exit 50 yards to the right, carry your tube over the bridge, and re-enter the other side”. NOT EVEN! It was more like “Oh my crap! We can’t stop. We are all gonna die!!!” I hopped out and pulled a full “Fred Flintstone” with my bare feet to stop our 4 tubes. It took so long to stop. Bob got out with ease (figures). Marisa tried to get out, got a foot stuck in the tube, and was hurling towards the bridge. Bob caught her in time and helped her get out. Then, lo and behold, a flip flop floated by and it was mine! Yeehaw! We had to climb over a giant fence and carry these giant heavy tubes to the other side- me with one flip-flop.

Getting in on the other side was no picnic either. I hopped in too fast, flipped my tube, and ended up sitting on the bottom of the shallow river wearing my tube as a hat. The rest of the way, we hit almost every rock! We flew into the bushes constantly with Alayna playing a “ball” and Bob getting a branches massage every few feet. The place to get out was as treacherous as the bridge exit. Marisa completely flipped and Tyler lost his drawers!

We survived and came in 40 minutes after everyone else in our group. But you know what the amazing thing was? Through it all we had the BEST time. We were laughing and joking through the whole thing and was one of the best experiences we have had as a family. I think it was a great ending memory for Marisa and a trip we will surely never forget! To sum it up, Ill quote Alayna who said, “That was NOTHING like the brochure!”

High Country Hart Adventure

Today, after a morning of odds and ends at BYU (including seeing the new library), we headed up Provo Canyon for an adventurous day.

DSCF1144

We went tubing down the Provo River (see next entry for the full “more-than-you-would-ever-want-to-know” about the most memorable adventure our family has had.)
